Blitz President Lydia Beals recently returned from a statewide youth soccer meeting for Colorado clubs in Denver. At the meeting, she was able to meet and talk to Briana Scurry. Scurry was the USA Women’s National Team Goalkeeper on the gold-medal-winning 1996 and 2004 Olympic teams, as well as the gold-medal winning 1999 World Cup team.

Scurry only started soccer at 12. She played multiple sports through high school. Scurry told the Colorado soccer leaders the biggest influence in making her successful was her parents and a youth coach who all told her that she could do anything she wanted to do. Scurry reminded the team leaders that all club volunteers and staff are role models for the players.

College experience was important for Scurry. Her coach at UMass told her and her teammates to “play like the first half didn’t happen.” She was called up to USWNT after losing to UNC in NCAA semifinals 4-1. Scurry talked a lot about always questioning her talent and that coach support and faith is what helped her have faith and confidence in herself. The message: coach support is critical in developing great players. Remember there is never a straight line to victory. It’s what you learn from the loss that matters. Captains are critical leaders for every team.
